On this day, the 4th of July, the United States marks its 250th anniversary of independence. A nation founded on the principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Today, promotoras are carrying these eighteenth-century ideals into a current call to action to protect communities from systemic barriers to the right to health and dignity.
Physical and mental health—the “pursuit of happiness”—is only possible when all institutions protect our rural to urban healthcare safety net. Promotoras are protectors of this basic right—right now—by ensuring that underserved communities have the information to exercise their foundational liberties and access resources for mental health and emotional well-being, and knowledge of our constitutional rights alike.
Promotoras, amid political budgetary rollbacks of that safety net, are preserving the spirit of “all are created equal” by delivering dignified care to all communities. Because their servicio de corazón in action means that “no one is left behind.”
Promotoras, CHWs, community leaders and allies for health equity nationwide: Happy Independence Day!
