PROMOTORAS’ STATEWIDE LEGISLATIVE WEEK OF ACTION 2025
This year we hosted a full week of virtual and in-person advocacy, connection, and celebration:
- 5/9 Friday: Virtual Community Celebration
- 5/5 Monday: Virtual Kickoff to Legislative Week
- 5/6 Tuesday: Statewide Report & Legislative Event
- 5/7 Wednesday: 20th Annual Promotoras’ Legislative Advocacy Day in Sacramento
- 5/8 Thursday: Virtual Workshop on Advocacy, Mental Health and Our Immigrant Communities
SACRAMENTO HIGHLIGHTS, A POWERFUL DAY OF ACTION
The 20th Annual Promotora Legislative Advocacy Day was a tremendous success!
Here’s what we accomplished together:
- Bailoterapia on the Capitol lawn
- March around the Capitol with more than 200 promotoras, promotores, community health workers, and allies
- Press conference featuring eight legislative representatives
- 63 scheduled meetings with representatives (legislative visits)
- 56 spontaneous (drop-in) legislative visits
- 20+ organizations participating in legislative day
This year, several important legislative bills passed that protect our communities and families.
- Requiring immigration agents to clearly show identification and prohibiting them from covering their faces.
- Limiting immigration enforcement activity in schools to help keep students safe.
- Supporting family preparedness plans so children are protected if a parent is detained.
- Expanding job training opportunities, such as internships and apprenticeships, at community colleges.
Your leadership, energy, and collective voice were felt across the Capitol.
YEAR-ROUND ADVOCACY ACROSS THE STATE
The 13 regional committees of the California Network of Promotoras continued meeting with local and state officials all year to advance community priorities, push forward local initiatives, and keep community needs at the center of policy conversations.
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS (KYR) & MENTAL HEALTH/EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING SERIES
In a climate marked by anti-immigrant policies, cuts to social services, and barriers to care, we expanded our support for communities navigating uncertainty by hosting spaces to learn, process and connect to one another.
This year, we hosted a monthly virtual Know Your Rights and Mental Health and Emotional Well-being training series:
- 43 total virtual sessions
- 3,000+ participants across more than 20 states
- KYR topics included: KYR Fundamentals, Safety Planning, Organizational Safety Plans, KYR Updates & Best Practices, Consulate Resources, Caregiver Rights, Travel Safety, and more.
Gracias de corazón to our partners: The Public Counsel, The Consulate of Mexico in Sacramento & San Francisco, All in For Safe Schools, The Children’s Partnership, and many others for being part of this vital work.
GET OUT THE VOTE: ¡VOTA!
Promotoras continue to demonstrate the power of voter education and civic leadership. This year we integrated voter education and voter registration into regional conferences, local events, and even within our own families reaching over 3,000 promotoras! We’re expanding our GOTV efforts to strengthen voter engagement and build long-term community voting power. More to come!
FEDERAL ADVOCACY
This year brought significant federal challenges, including proposed cuts to programs that directly impact low-income, immigrant, and underserved communities. Our commitment remains firm: to advocate boldly so that SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, community health programs, and other lifeline services remain fully funded and protected.
In 2025, we traveled to Washington, D.C., to advocate alongside promotoras, community health workers, community-based organizations, and allied organizations. We met with partners and elected officials to ensure our stories and priorities were clearly heard.
We look forward to returning in 2026, stronger than ever, to continue elevating community voices at the federal level.
